Keira Knightley in talks to lead Catherine the Great biopic

THE WRAP – Two-time Oscar nominee Keira Knightley is in early talks to play Russian empress Catherine the Great in a biopic that Barbra Streisand will direct for producer Gil Netter’s Netter Productions, TheWrap has exclusively learned.

Kristina Lauren Anderson wrote the script, which topped the 2014 Black List of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays.

Netter and representatives for Knightley did not respond to requests for comment.

Catherine the Great was born Sophia Augusta Fredericka to German royalty and took power when her husband was assassinated, ruling from 1762 to 1796 while modernizing the Russian empire.

The film will follow young Catherine, who was trapped in an abusive marriage with the heir of the Russian throne — a role that is currently being cast now.

Besides a beloved Black List script, “Catherine the Great” boasts significant pedigree between Netter, who has two Oscar nominations for producing “Life of Pi” and “The Blind Side,” and Streisand, who won a Golden Globe for directing “Yentl” and has two Oscars of her own. Streisand’s films have received a total of 14 Oscar nominations.

Keira Knightley starring in new biopic ‘Colette’

Empire are currently reporting that Keira Knightley has signed onto a new biopic Colette, which looks at the life of famous French writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette.

EMPIRE – Before the likes of Madonna and Cher earned fame with just one name, there was French writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, who went by the single moniker Colette. Now Still Alice co-director Wash Westmoreland is preparing a biopic of her, and has Keira Knightley close to a deal to star.

Westmoreland wrote the film with his late husband and fellow Alice writer/director Richard Glatzer and will be calling the shots. The biopic will focus on Colette’s marriage to celebrated Parisian scribe Willy Gauthier-Villars, who was 14 years older than his wife when they married in 1893 and one of the most notorious libertines in Paris. During their time together, he introduced her to some of the more avant-garde circles and encouraged both her literary prowess and her love for women. After their separation in 1906, her writing career truly took off and she became known for works such as Gigi, Cheri and the Claudine series of books. A mime, an actress and a journalist at various points in her career, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1948.

You can see why the filmmakers and now Knightley might be attracted to the story, and it has the backing of Bold Films and HanWay Films, the latter of which worked on Carol.Pam Koffler, Christine Vachon, Elizabeth Karlsen and Empire video blog stalwart Stephen Woolley are all on board to produce, and Westmoreland is scheduled to start shooting this May in Budapest.

Keira Knightley’s 4 Covers for September ELLE

Keira Knightley is set to be the cover star for the September issue of ELLE, and along with four gorgeous covers they have released an extract from her interview which you can read below.

Who better to embody the ELLE spirit than Keira Knightley. Beautiful, talented, well-read, open-minded, opinionated, feminist, fashion-forward, and like ELLE … delivered 30 years ago. In honor of ELLE’s 30th birthday, photographer Paola Kudacki shot four exclusive covers styled by Samira Nasr with 30-year-old actress that highlight ELLE’s dual French and American heritage (ELLE France was founded in 1945) and the vital role that beauty and accessories play in the magazine’s fashion identity.

Holly Millea sat down with Knightley to talk about the power of 30—or what we like to call ‘the new starting line’. To find out what she had to say check out the entire cover story exclusively in the September issue of ELLE—available digitally and in select cities now, and on newsstands nationwide August 18.

Here, a preview of four of the many things that made us fall in love with her…

    HER 30TH BIRTHDAY WASN’T WHAT SHE EXPECTED…

“I was heavily pregnant, I couldn’t drink—what is the point of having a thirtieth birthday if I couldn’t get phenomenally drunk? But my husband took over, arranged a lovely lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, 20 of us, and they were all being so sweet, like, ‘Look, you can have a great time and be sober!’ And it’s fine apart from the fact that they started drinking at about one. Then they came back to our house—they’d covered it in balloons that said my name and happy birthday and all that—and they got completely obliterated. They were there until two or three in the morning, absolutely drunk, and I was there eight months pregnant, completely sober. So it was lovely, but it wasn’t what I’d imagined a thirtieth birthday was going to be.”
