  • Born in Teddington, Greater London and raised in Richmond, a small suburban town in south-west London. Keira’s parents are Will Knightley and Sharman Macdonald, who married in 1976. Her father is a stage and television actor while her mother (of Scottish/Welsh descent) is an actress turned-playwright and screenwriter.
  • Keira has one sibling – an older brother, Caleb, who is a sound designer.
  • Her name was originally meant to be spelled as the more traditional ‘Kiera’, influenced by the Russian ice skater, Kira Ivanova, whom her father admired. However, her mother misspelled the name when she went to register her daughter’s birth, writing the “e” before the “i”.
  • Keira and brother Caleb were introduced to ballet and musical theater at a young age. She notably asked her parents for an agent at the age of three.
  • Was diagnosed as dyslexic at the age of six. As a huge fan of Emma Thompson, Keira credits reading her screenplay of Sense and Sensibility, and imagining what Thompson would do in her position as a turning point in dealing with the learning disability. As reward and incentive for consistent or improving school grades, her mother would allow her to act and attend auditions during school holidays – however, if her grades dropped, she wasn’t allowed to act. With the support of her parents’ and tuition, she was deemed to have sufficiently overcome the condition by 11. She isn’t able to sight-read and confessed that she is a slow reader. Keira’s brother, Caleb, had also struggled with dyslexia.
  • Dark Crystal was her favorite childhood film.
  • Attended Stanley Primary School and later Teddington School, achieving ten GCSE’s – including 6 A*’s, 3 A’s and a B grade. She later studied at Esher College, her A Level subjects were English Literate, Art, and History. She left the college after three months, deciding to pursue and prioritize her acting career.
  • Keira is a lifelong supporter of West Ham United, an English Premier League football team.
  • Was reportedly in contention for the lead role in Evening, directed by Lajos Koltai. Due to scheduling conflicts, she was unable to appear in the film. Claire Danes was ultimately cast as Ann.
  • Notes Songs of Love and Hate by Leonard Cohen as one of her favorite albums–with track Famous Blue Raincoat one of her most loved songs.
  • In 2008, industry leader Variety reported that Keira was in contention for the lead role in a remake of My Fair Lady. Joe Wright was at one point rumored to have been directing the film, but other reports noted that he had passed on the project. Carey Mulligan later became attached in Keira’s place, but as of 2018, the film is still in development.
  • Favorite artists include Supertramp, LCD Soundsystem, Metronomy, The English Riviera, Talking Heads, Leonard Cohen, Telepathy.
  • Said auditioning for the role of Christine in the 2004 retelling of The Phantom of the Opera was the singularly most embarrassing moment of her life because “I knew I couldn’t sing it.” The role eventually went to trained opera singer Emmy Rossum.
  • In a 2011 feature for Interview magazine, Keira cited Little Miss Sunshine, True Grit, Black Swan, Blue Valentine as some of her favorite modern films.
  • Is a huge fan of Emma Thompson. Her mother worked with Thompson on her 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility.
  • Admitted she would love to work with director Jane Campion, as well as actresses Mia Wasikowska, Natalie Portman, and Scarlett Johansson.
  • In March 2010, she was named alongside Richard Gere and Eric Bana as actors attached to Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of The Emperor’s Children. The film was due to begin filming in the summer of 2010. As of 2018, it is still listed as “in development”, with none of the former attached to the project.
  • Casablanca and Gone with the Wind are two of her favorite romantic films.
  • Cites Esther Greenwood in Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar as the role she’d like to play.
  • Was in contention for the role of Chenault in The Rum Diary, alongside Johnny Depp. Amber Heard was later cast.
  • Married James Righton on May 4, 2013 at the Mazan Town Hall in Mazan, France. The private ceremony was low-key, with just 11 guests in attendance. Keira wore a strapless white tulle dress and pink pumps, along with a cropped Chanel jacket and a daisy-chain style garland on her head.
  • During an interview segment with Peter Travers in September 2018, Keira was asked which of her films had meant the most to her. She highlighted Pride & Prejudice, Last Night, A Dangerous Method, and Never Let Me Go.
  • In Glamour’s 2014 Twitter takeover, Keira stated she considers her purple Chanel dress for the Atonement premiere at Toronto International Film Festival as her favorite red carpet look. The green dress from the film is her favorite costume.
  • Gave birth to her first child, daughter Edie Righton in late May 2015.
  • Favorite films include La Reine Margot, Reds, Klute, Lawrence of Arabia, MASH, To Kill A Mockingbird, Lincoln, Jarhead, The Great Gatsby, World War Z, and The Notebook.
  • Remains close friends with Carey Mulligan, after first meeting on the set of Pride & Prejudice and then later appeared together in Never Let Me Go. In a profile for W Magazine, Mulligan credited Keira for helping her remain grounded as an actress. “Keira had been in Pirates of the Caribbean, and she was unbelievably famous. I didn’t need to put this into practice until years later, but she was the model of how to be a leading actress on set. She was brilliant, but she was also so kind and so sweet, and it sort of removed the possibility in the future of there being any excuse for being anything but lovely.”
